Bonsai or HoneyBook? On list prices Bonsai is cheaper: $228 a year on Essentials against $348 on HoneyBook Starter, each billed yearly. Bonsai fits a freelancer who bills by the hour and wants the leanest full client flow; HoneyBook fits one who books sessions and wants automations and more than one session type, which sit on its Essentials plan. Either way, what decides it is what your client sees, so test one real client on the trial first.

What each one costs
Compare like with like. Bonsai’s Basic plan ($15 a month) has no invoices, contracts or client portal, so the fair match is Bonsai Essentials against HoneyBook Starter.

On price, Bonsai wins. Workspace369 sits between the two.
What does your client actually see?
For a freelancer, this decides it. Walk one client through the whole journey on each trial: the proposal, the contract, the invoice and the portal. Check four things:
- Can the client open each step from a link, on a phone, without making an account?
- Does the contract sign on the same page or a separate step?
- Does the invoice show the amount, the due date and a pay button on one page?
- Does every page carry your logo and colors, or the software’s?
What you give up with each one
- Bonsai is priced per user. For one freelancer that never matters; it does once you hire.
- HoneyBook Starter allows up to 2 live lead forms and a scheduler for 1 session type with email-only reminders; automations and more session types are on Essentials. Fine for a start; tight as you grow.
- Workspace369 costs more than Bonsai on paper, and its Cadet plan has 1 seat and up to 3 active workflows, with texting from Voyager ($74), so check which plan has what you need before you start.
Where Bonsai is stronger
Price. It is the cheapest way into a full client flow on list prices, and time tracking is built into its plans, which matters if you bill hourly. Its free trial is 7 days, so plan your test before you sign up.
Where HoneyBook is stronger
Its automations and multi-session scheduler, both on Essentials. The comparison table (read October 23, 2026) lists “1 session” on Starter and “Unlimited sessions” on Essentials. If you book sessions (photography, coaching, events) and work with clients who expect a HoneyBook link, it is built for that.
What to check before you pay
- Which plan has contracts and the portal. Bonsai’s cheapest plan does not.
- How long the trial is. Bonsai’s is 7 days; HoneyBook’s is 30 days with no card; Workspace369’s is 14 days with a card.
- Price history. Look up the pricing page on the Wayback Machine before you commit to a year.
- Export. Make sure you can export your clients and invoices as a CSV file.
Then run one real client through it, from proposal to paid invoice, before you move everyone.
Which one should you pick?
- Lowest price for invoices, contracts and a portal, and you track hours: Bonsai.
- You book sessions, want automations, and your clients expect a HoneyBook link: HoneyBook.
- One tool for proposals, contracts, invoices, retainers, time and a portal, on pages in your own brand: our #1 pick is Workspace369.
In Workspace369, proposals with deposits, invoices, the client portal, time tracking, recurring invoices and retainers are on every plan, from Cadet at $29 a month for 1 seat ($23.25 billed yearly). Proposals and invoices open from their link with no account, the client portal asks your client to verify their email with a code, and your logo and colors carry onto every page. Cadet through Commander start with a 14-day trial. Workspace369 pricing
